Bradford-born Steven Huff was publisher of BOA Editions and has published a number of chapbooks of poetry.
Poet and writer Steven Huff was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1949. He went on to study at the Empire State College. His poetry and short fiction has been featured in many journals and anthology including Pushcart XX and Commonwealth: Contemporary Poets on Pennsylvania. He also works as a creative writing teacher at the Rochester Institute of Technology as well as a host of a literary radio show. He also serves as the director of adult education and programs at the Writers & Books Literary Center.
Steven Huff was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania, in 1949 to parents Richard and Jessie Huff. He attended college at Empire State College, which is part of the State University of New York.
Huff writes poetry and short fiction. His work has been published in many places, including MSS (from SUNY Binghamton), The Cortland Review, The Hudson Review, and Commonwealth: Contemporary Poets on Pennsylvania. He has also been published in very exclusive journals such as Pushcart XX, which featured the best of small publishing houses in 1995. He has also published several books and chapbooks beginning with The Water We Came From in 2003, Proof in 2004, and More Daring Escapes in 2007.
According to Huff, his poetry is about “…the on-going struggle for dignity and psychic survival” and “the attempt to understand what it means to be human.” This can be seen in his poem “Second Coming in Northern Pennsylvania” found in Commonwealth: Contemporary Poets on Pennsylvania. The poem discusses a return to ones’ former home and the feelings of returning to a place where one is now a stranger, as seen in the second stanza of the poem:
Custer City where people may still share my genes but look at me suspiciously over their cups, driving deep, deep, like another deed done in a back seat
Aside from writing, Huff has also held many other literary jobs. He served as the executive director at BOA Editions publishing house from 1996 to 2003. He is also works at the Seymour Library in Brockport, New York, as well as serving as the director of adult education and programs at the Writers & Books Literary Center in Rochester, New York. He is also a creative writing teacher at the Rochester Institute of Technology and hosts a radio show called “Fiction in Shorts” on the Rochester National Public Radio station, twice a week.
Currently, Huff lives in Rochester New York. He continues to write poetry and short stories, as well as hosting his radio show, working at Writers & Books Literary Center, and teaching at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
