Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander
Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, born January 2, 1898, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a trailblazing African American economist, lawyer, and civil rights advocate. In 1921, she became the first African American woman in the US to earn a PhD in economics, and in 1927, the first woman to receive a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Throughout her career, Alexander championed racial and gender justice, shaping economic policy and civil rights law. She passed away on November 1, 1989, in Philadelphia. Alexander was honored posthumously for her achievements and inducted as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association.
