Abstract
Margaretta Forten, an activist for women and African American rights, was born in Philadelphia in 1806. Forten was active locally, composing abolitionist poetry under several pen names and even assisting with drafting the constitution for the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society. She was invested in the education of African American children and taught in many schools throughout her life. Read more here.
