Do You Know Which Ones Will Grow?
With this brightly colored, rhyming, lift-the-flap book, children will ponder which things in the world grow and which do not grow. Children will learn vocabulary—names of objects, baby animals, rhymes, and the concept of living and nonliving. They will have fun guessing yes or no questions that are posed and enjoy the humor and engaging illustrations.

As you read through the book, allow children to lift the flaps. After reading the first two pages, point out the words, “Yes and No” to the children. As you read each page, they can answer “Yes or No” by holding up “Yes or No” word cards, or hold their thumbs up or down. Talk about the differences between things that grow and those that do not. Read the book a second time and encourage the children to finish each sentence with the rhyming word. As an extension ask the children to create a picture of a living or nonliving thing to put in a book or to place on a chart.
Explain to parents that there are many concepts children can learn from this book, including rhyming, things in the world that grow and those that do not, and vocabulary, including names of baby animals and objects. Remind parents to encourage the children to lift the flaps in the book, answer “Yes” or “No” to the questions, and read along after the first reading. Parents could stop before the last word of each line and let the child finish it. They could also help children find examples of living and nonliving things around the house and in the neighborhood.
