Lynd Ward Prize Judges

The Lynd Ward Prize is selected by a diverse panel with graphic novel expertise, including individuals with significant ties to Penn State University.

2021 Lynd Ward Prize Judges:

  • Karen M. Lambert has worked as a Librarian in the Adult Department at Schlow Centre Region Library since 2010. She evaluates published trade reviews (print and online), purchases, and maintains the graphic novel collections for the teen and adult library collections. Further, she is a co-coordinator of BookFestPA, which promotes local comic book creators and illustrators. (State College, PA)
     
  • Charlotte Land is an Assistant Professor of Education, with an emphasis on language and literacy studies, at Penn State University. Her research and teaching focus on reading and writing at the intermediate and secondary grade-levels. Part of her work on critical and culturally sustaining literacy teaching has included thinking with teachers and young people about expanding definitions of “what counts” as quality literature or writing. She has also had the pleasure of working with different groups of young people in creating graphic novels/comics of their own. (University Park, PA)
     
  • Victoria McCrary is an undergraduate student at The Pennsylvania State University and is a passionate reader, creator, and game designer. Her love for the arts began at an early age and has continued to be refined throughout her educational journey. (University Park, PA)
     
  • Anjana Padmakumar Renuka is a graduate student from the Stuckeman School of Art and Architecture at Penn State University under the department of Graphic Design. She previously worked as an illustrator and Graphic Designer in various advertising firms and publishing houses. She is interested in the communication of complex social issues through images and has a specific interest in picture books and graphic novels. Her thesis is currently being explored in this medium, studying how to incorporate Data Visualisation techniques to allow children to understand issues in the modern world today.   • John Shableski is a publishing industry veteran who has created grant programs, industry awards, and graphic novel-centric professional development programs for national and international trade shows, conferences, and conventions. His ultimate objective is to help struggling students discover their joy of reading.
