In this story, a little boy has an adventure with his father every Friday. It’s his favorite day of the week and he can hardly wait for Friday to come. They walk through the city streets to go to the diner to have breakfast and talk. It is a quiet celebration of a special time between a father and son.

Ask children to pantomime something the boy sees someone doing in this book. For instance, pretend to be sweeping the sidewalk with a broom or pretend to be unloading a truck or welding on a building construction site. The children can take turns and guess each of the pantomimes. You might also have the children act out these city activities as a group.
Start a family tradition yourself. It doesn’t have to be going out to eat, but try to set apart some special time for time together. Try to schedule it for the same time each week or each month, so you will be more likely to stick to the plan—and will give the family members involved something to look forward to. It could be something as simple as going on a walk. The important thing is not what you do—it’s spending time together with a chance to “talk about all sorts of things,” as the boy and his father do in the book.
