I Quit
The end of gray days finally comes when a lonesome cat is adopted by a special family…or so Cat thinks. At first, things are ideal; and then the rules begin. Our feline narrator starts to realize that the days of lounging, snacking, and chasing are coming to an end, so Cat decides to quit! The path to independence becomes less exciting when nightfall comes, and Cat feels wet and cold and alone. Suddenly, though, there is a (flash)light in the darkness and a warm reunion saves the day. Sometimes the purr-suit of happiness leads a person right back home.

Book Activities & Discussion Ideas
Before reading, tell children this story is based on the author’s real-life cat, who had trouble learning how to behave in her new home—getting into trash, taking baby toys, and even disappearing once! Luckily, the cat returned and became a beloved member of the family.
This story is great for group conversation. Start by inviting children to guess why the cat is angry just from looking at the cover. Kids with cats at home may enjoy sharing stories of their own. As you read, encourage them to talk about what’s happening in the bold, expressive illustrations. This book’s humor and drama are perfect for a lively, theatrical read-aloud!
Young children often struggle with rules—just like the cat in this story. While she wants to explore and play, she ends up breaking a lot of house rules. But by the end, we see that her family still loves her and even gives her a name: Wild Princess. She begins to follow some rules and take part in family life. This is a reassuring message for children who worry about making mistakes.
Together, create a short list of home rules. Invite children to contribute ideas—including fun ones, or even rules for grown-ups! Talk about how some rules are easier to follow than others, and that everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Write or draw the rules together and choose a special place to display them. Checking in on the list now and then can help everyone feel part of a supportive, rule-following team.
