Poet and activist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper lived for most of her life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A free black woman, she was not only a talented poet, novelist, journalist, and essayist, but an avid activist for abolition and women's suffrage. She was one of few African American women who spoke out about the unique, intersectional struggles of race and sex. Read more here.
